Music has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. The beats of Spanish Harlem still resonate in my bones, thanks to growing up with the street drums and bongos ringing in the parks on hot summer nights in El Barrio. Wintertime had its own rhythm, with fiery garbage cans lighting up the winter skies. Around every street corner in Spanish Harlem there was a sound, a passion, a beat, and I had to be a part of it.
East Harlem, or Spanish Harlem, is an iconic area of New York, filled with all kinds of unique things that make it unlike anywhere else. Despite the name, immigrants from all over have come to here – Italians, Middle Easterners, and Puerto Ricans, just to name a few. It is this community that influenced me from my birth in 1977.
The tapestry of people brought more than just themselves and their languages to the area. They brought their cultures – the music, the food, the art – and let that be woven into the fabric of East Harlem, too. House music originated in New York, and growing up where I did, it became a part of my roots. I grew up in a generation that was blessed with being able to listen to some of the best house music DJs in the world right near my apartment. As a child in the early 1980s I loved house music and immersed myself in the works of artists and producers like Todd Terry, Kenny Dope, Louie Vega, and David Morales, just to name a few.
I was also born at the right time to take advantage of the increase in innovative technology and pair that with house music. My business partners and I had a music marketing company that helped artists in all types of music genres. We then decided to launch www.nychouseradio.com in January 2013. We wanted to reach anyone, anywhere in the world with our “global connect secret”. The music we pick is like that of the best clubs in the world. No top-40 pop song remixes for us!
